International Human Rights Day Observed by Indian Red Cross Society, Manipur State Branch
On 10th December 2024, the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Manipur State Branch,
commemorated International Human Rights Day at its headquarters on MG Avenue,
Imphal. The observance featured a distinguished lineup of guests, including Dr. RK Nimai
Singh, Retd. IAS and Vice President of IRCS, Manipur, who served as the Chief Guest,
Shri Narendra Ningomba, Chairman of the State Branch, who presided over the event, and
Dr. Yumnam Premananda, Head of the Department of Law at Manipur University, who
was the resource person for the program. In the audience, volunteers from various districts,
representatives from nursing institutes, and members of the press were present.
The event began with the keynote address by Shri Narendra Ningomba, Chairman of IRCS,
Manipur. In his speech, he took the audience through the evolution of human rights,
highlighting the pivotal role played by Sir Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross
movement. He reflected on how Dunant’s vision of humanitarian care laid the foundation
for the global recognition and promotion of human rights, which continues to be relevant
today.
Dr. Yumnam Premananda, in his address as the resource
person, elaborated on the various aspects of human
rights and international humanitarian law (IHL). He
stressed the crucial importance of understanding
human rights in their full scope, particularly in the
context of Manipur, where conflict-related violence
persists. He noted that every human being is born with
inherent rights, and these must be protected by the government and competent authorities.
Without such protection, he argued, the very concept of democracy becomes meaningless.
Dr. Premananda also provided a detailed overview of the founding principles of
International Humanitarian Law, discussing how it evolved and became a vital framework
for the protection of civilians and combatants in times of war and armed conflict. He
pointed out that in today’s world, where conflicts are widespread, IHL has become an
indispensable part of efforts to mitigate human suffering.
The Chief Guest, Dr. RK Nimai Singh, Vice President of
IRCS, Manipur, highlighted the importance of public
awareness about human rights. He emphasized that
it is essential for citizens to be well-informed about
their rights so that they can prevent and challenge
any violations, particularly by public authorities. Dr.
Singh commended the IRCS, Manipur State Branch,
for its tireless work in promoting humanitarian
causes, especially in recent years. He specifically acknowledged the role played by the
Red Cross during the COVID-19 pandemic and in responding to the ongoing conflict in
the state. He expressed deep appreciation for the dedicated volunteers of the Red Cross,
whose selfless service continues to make a significant impact on society.
The observance concluded with a reaffirmation of the commitment of the Indian Red Cross
Society to uphold the principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence,
voluntary service, unity, and universality, as it continues to support the welfare of
communities in need, particularly in times of crisis.
