Devastating Hailstorm Hits Manipur: IRCS Manipur’s Swift Response and Continued Support – May 5th, 2024 – A Day to Remember

On May 5th, 2024, Manipur experienced a catastrophic hailstorm that wreaked havoc across several districts, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Over 15,000 houses were damaged, with Imphal West, Imphal East, and several other districts bearing the brunt of the storm. Tragically, one life was lost, and two individuals sustained injuries during the storm.

Impact Across Districts

• Imphal West: 6,053 houses damaged

• Imphal East: 5,600 houses damaged

• Churachandpur: 540 houses damaged

• Bishnupur: 1,179 houses damaged

• Thoubal: 800 houses damaged

• Kangpokpi: 292 houses damaged

• Ukhrul: 200 houses damaged

IRCS Manipur’s Immediate Response

In the aftermath of this devastating event, the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Manipur stepped in swiftly to provide much-needed relief and support to the affected communities. Understanding the urgency and gravity of the situation, IRCS Manipur mobilized resources and volunteers to deliver essential aid to those in dire need.

Humanitarian Aid Delivered

In a rapid response effort, IRCS Manipur provided immediate relief to approximately 500 households. The support included:

Tarpaulins: To provide temporary shelter and protection from the elements.

Hygiene Kits: Ensuring the health and well-being of those affected by maintaining proper hygiene practices during this critical time.
